"Three Kings" and "I Heart Huckabees" director David O. Russell leaked out as one of Sony's picks to helm an "Uncharted" movie adaptation earlier this year. That report has now been corroborated, as Russell and Columbia Pictures have reached an agreement to put him on the project and make "Uncharted: Drakes Fortune" more than just a PlayStation 3 game.
"David is a tremendous choice to take on this film," Columbia president Matt Tolmache said in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "He's equally adept at combining all the classic elements involved in this property: great character development, strong comedy and amazing action sequences. He has a brilliant vision for this material and we know he will bring his original, unique voice to this adaptation."
The flipside of this deal seems to be that Russell won't be able to start shooting "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" next year as Natalie Portman had anticipated.
If he can apply the same kind of vision that brought George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube's machismo to "Three Kings" and kept its action/adventure elements intact while bringing out an edgy, compelling story, Russell may prove to be an ideal choice here. "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" fans, meanwhile, may be a little forlorn over the project's implications for that film, but the guy can only work on so many jobs at once. Plus, they'll be able to see plenty of Portman in the upcoming "Black Swan" and next year's "Your Highness."
